Do you need a visa?
Yes, even as an EU citizen. Since Brexit, people without status under the EU Settlement Scheme need a visa to work in the UK. For tech jobs, it is the Skilled Worker visa.
Skilled Worker visa: requirements
- An offer from an employer licensed to sponsor visas, which gives you a Certificate of Sponsorship.
- An eligible job, usually at graduate level.
- Minimum salary: the one in the box above, or the job's "going rate", whichever is higher.
- English at B1 level (proved by a degree or an approved test).
Costs (paid by you, unless the employer covers them)
- Visa fee: official table.
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year of visa, paid up front; it gives access to the NHS.
How to apply
- With the Certificate of Sponsorship, apply online on GOV.UK. With a European passport, identity is usually confirmed through the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app.
- The visa is digital (eVisa): it sits in a UKVI account, which you use to prove your right to work and rent.
- Family: your spouse and children can come as dependants, paying the same fees.
- Settlement requires several years on a visa; the rules are being reviewed by the government.
Documents and where to get them
In your country, before you leave
- Passport, valid for the whole move; the visa is issued in the passport.
- Birth certificate (and marriage certificate, if married). Usually with an apostille (or legalisation) and a certified translation; check with the embassy.
- Criminal record certificate from your country of nationality and, if different, from where you lived recently: visa applications often require it. Request it close to the date it will be used.
- Degree, transcript and references from previous jobs, digitally, with certified translations if the visa asks for them.
In the UK
- National Insurance number: apply online on GOV.UK. You can start work before you have it.
- Proof of right to work and rent: share codes generated in your UKVI account.
- Proof of address: lease or bank letter; needed to open an account and register with a GP.
Step by step
Before you leave
- Confirm in writing the gross annual salary, the start date, the relocation support and whether the employer pays the visa fee and health surcharge.
- Apply for the visa with the Certificate of Sponsorship and create your UKVI account.
- Find housing; in London, landlords usually ask for a deposit of up to 5 weeks' rent.
- In your country, tell the authorities you are moving: update your registered address and your tax residence. In the year you leave, tax may be due for the part of the year you were still resident.
First week
- Apply for your National Insurance number.
- Open a UK bank account.
- Register with an NHS GP near your home.
First month
- Check your tax code on the first payslip, so you do not pay emergency tax.
- Register for council tax with the local council.
