Do you need a visa?
Yes, for every nationality. Skilled professionals usually work on an Employment Pass:
- The employer applies to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), for a job with at least the qualifying salary shown above, which rises with age.
- Applications are also assessed by points (COMPASS): salary, qualifications, and the employer's diversity and local hiring.
- Your family can come with a Dependant's Pass, if your salary reaches the level required for it.
- For very high earners there is the ONE Pass, not tied to one employer.
Documents and where to get them
In your country, before you leave
- Passport, valid for the whole move; the visa is issued in the passport.
- Birth certificate (and marriage certificate, if married). Usually with an apostille (or legalisation) and a certified translation; check with the embassy.
- Criminal record certificate from your country of nationality and, if different, from where you lived recently: visa applications often require it. Request it close to the date it will be used.
- Degree, transcript and references from previous jobs, digitally, with certified translations if the visa asks for them.
In Singapore
- Employment Pass card: issued after you arrive, once the employer completes the steps with MOM (photo and fingerprints).
- Singpass: the digital ID for government services and taxes.
- Income tax: not withheld from each salary for most employees; you file once a year and pay IRAS directly.
Step by step
Before you leave
- Confirm in writing the monthly salary in Singapore dollars, bonuses, the start date and the relocation support, including housing.
- Wait for the in-principle approval letter from MOM, which lets you enter for work.
- Housing is expensive: a deposit of one or two months' rent is usual.
- In your country, tell the authorities you are moving: update your registered address and your tax residence. In the year you leave, tax may be due for the part of the year you were still resident.
First week
- Complete the Employment Pass steps with your employer (registration of photo and fingerprints).
- Open a bank account and give the details to your employer.
First month
- Set up your Singpass.
- Set aside part of your salary for the yearly income tax.
