Do you need a visa?

Yes. For skilled jobs, the usual route is the EU Blue Card:

  • A job offer or contract for a highly qualified job, usually of at least 6 months.
  • A degree or, for IT jobs, equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum gross salary set by Lithuania and updated every year.

For other jobs there is a national work and residence permit. Both are usually requested with the employer, then you apply for the entry visa if your nationality needs one and register after arriving.

Documents and where to get them

In your country, before you leave

  • Passport, valid for the whole move; the visa is issued in the passport.
  • Birth certificate (and marriage certificate, if married). Usually with an apostille (or legalisation) and a certified translation; check with the embassy.
  • Criminal record certificate from your country of nationality and, if different, from where you lived recently: visa applications often require it. Request it close to the date it will be used.
  • Degree, transcript and references from previous jobs, digitally, with certified translations if the visa asks for them.

On arrival

  • Residence registration at the local office, and your residence permit card.
  • Personal identification number for tax and social security: the employer needs it to pay your salary.
  • Health insurance: you are normally insured through your job.
  • Bank account in Lithuania or in euros, for your salary.

Step by step

Before you leave

  1. Sign the contract and confirm in writing the gross annual salary, the start date and the relocation support.
  2. Make sure the employer has applied for your permit, then apply for the entry visa if your nationality needs one.
  3. Gather the documents above, on paper and digitally.
  4. Find housing with an address where you can register.
  5. In your country, tell the authorities you are moving: update your registered address and your tax residence. In the year you leave, tax may be due for the part of the year you were still resident.

First week

  1. Register your address and get your personal identification number.
  2. Open a bank account and give the details to your employer.

First month

  1. Check that you are registered with the public health insurance (or take out the insurance the country requires).
  2. Check the tax and contributions on your first payslip.
